In 1977 two spacecraft launched into space to explore our outer solar system. Voyager 1 has already left our solar system and is the farthest human-made object ever made. Both Voyager probes carry on them a golden record, a big "hello!" from all of us on Earth, just in case someone finds them one day. The golden record has on its outside engraved instructions for how to operate the record, and the record itself contains sights and sounds from our planet, music, and greetings in 55 different languages.

Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan chose these representative photos and audio recordings, and their son spoke the iconic "Hello from the children of planet earth" message. As Carl Sagan said, "The spacecraft will be encountered and the record played only if there are advanced space-faring civilizations in interstellar space. But the launching of this 'bottle' into the cosmic 'ocean' says something very hopeful about life on this planet."

Q: Is this a record I can play on a phonograph?
A: No, this is a replica of the Voyager Golden Record, laser engraved to look like the real thing, but it's not a vinyl record.

Q: What's the difference between the "metal" and "laminate" replicas?
A: Both are full size replicas of the original Golden Record cover. The difference is in the material.
The metal replica is made of anodised aluminium, a rigid, 1mm thick disc of aluminium with a thin golden layer on top. When laser etched, it reveals the silvery-metallic colour underneath. The back side is also golden. The metal replica can be made with or without a hole in the middle.
The laminate replica is made of a type of acrylic plastic that has a black layer with a golden layer on top. When laser etched, it reveals the black colour underneath. The back side is black. The laminate replica can be made with or without a hole in the middle. It is 1.6mm thick and slightly flexible.

Q: How do I clean my Golden Record?
A: Be careful not to touch the face of the record as fingerprints do show up. To clean, use a soft, lint-free cloth (the kind used to clean eyeglasses is best). This is often enough, but if you need more then use some dishwashing liquid diluted with water. Do not use harsh cleaning materials like Windex.
